Greek Dances

Greek dancing has very ancient beginnings. For over 2000 years this form of traditional dancing served as a very social function. It would bring people together throughout the year for various things, including festivals, weddings and holidays such as Easter. The following are the most popular dances we perform.

Hasapiko- (pronounced hah-SAH-pee-koh): A very popular Greek dance. It comes from the word butcher. In Byzantine times, it was started by members of the Butcher's Guild. It is referred to as a panhellenic dance.

Zorba- This is a Syrtaki dance. It starts out with a very slow Hasapiko step then gets faster and faster, ending in a lively Hassposerviko. This dance is choreographed for performance with the most popular piece of Greek music, the theme from the movie Zorba the Greek.

Kalamatianos- (pronounced kala-mat-chia-nos): A seven-step dance that involves stepping out on the right foot with the other foot placed behind.

Hassaposervikos (pronounced hasa-pu-ser-veek-ohs): Involves a one-two-three kick (kick right and left) movement of stepping and kicking on the third count.
